Introduction

The City of Racine is working to reduce the digital divide between those that have internet, a computer, and know-how to use both and those that don’t. This project is focused on the training aspect. For those who have never or rarely operated a computer this position will teach them the basics of how to use a computer and the internet safely and securely. We want to ensure everyone in the City of Racine can easily use a computer to do the things they need to do such as homework, research information important to them, find and apply for a job, complete online forms, and partake in telehealth. 

This job involves being taught how to go out into the community, work with non-profit organizations, and others to provide citizen training for those who speak Spanish or have limited English skills in the use of computers, and then doing that work.

This is very impactful work because the purpose of a Smart City is to improve the lives of a city’s citizens and increase economic development through appropriate use of technology.


Position Purpose
Under the direction of the Chief Information Officer, this position will help teach those who speak Spanish or have limited English skills basic computer skills. You will also have the opportunity to help plan, implement, and create processes and procedures to help sustain the program within the City of Racine and help increase computer use skills through in person training.

Expected Student Outcome

  1. Gain experience teaching people (especially Spanish language, vulnerable or underserved populations) digital literacy skills by being calm, patient, and understanding of where they are in their learning
  2. Help research, plan, and implement a program
  3. Increase in community engagement and training skills with hands-on experience
  4. Experience working for a city government and making an impact on the community
  5. Network with professionals in the field
  6. Gain confidence for classroom learning and future internship/career opportunities

 

Essential Duties

  • Learn how to teach people (especially Spanish language, vulnerable or underserved populations) computer skills in a considerate, kind, and approachable way
  • Teach those who know nothing about computers up to and including those who have some digital literacy skills 
  • Help organize meetings and events that will include training
  • Schedule, plan, and lead training
  • Take notes regarding the training and work completed
  • Assist in creating plans for different ways to work within the community
  • Possibly train a network of supporters, advocates, and partners in the city to reach out to the vulnerable or underserved population
  • Bring together a group of individuals or organizations to achieve a common objective 
  • Research anything you don’t know how to do and ask questions for guidance
  • Other duties as assigned around Spanish language Community Engagement and Training

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Fluent in English and Spanish (proficient in speaking, reading, and writing)

Educational Requirements

  • Currently attending a two- or four-year college/university
  • Have completed at least 2 classes in sociology, community engagement, political science, public affairs, public relations, public and nonprofit management, education, information technology or a similar field.
  • Computer literacy skills at an intermediate level
  • Experience tutoring or training preferred

  • Teaching others, especially vulnerable or underserved populations, including the elderly in English and Spanish
  • Working one-on-one collaboratively and looking for understanding and consensus
  • Working with people of diverse backgrounds 
  • Collaborating with individuals or groups to accomplish tasks 
  • Developing a project from the ground up 
  • Working with a community or organizations to bring about positive change

  • Be willing to attend meetings, events, and training in the evening or day
  • Ability to attend off-site locations for community events and training

 

College Credit 
You might be able to receive college credit for this internship. Please confirm with your school. 

Physical Demands of the Position

  • Sitting and typing at a terminal while viewing a computer screen. 

Environmental/Working Conditions of the Position

  • Sitting at a desk in an air-conditioned/heated office or working from home, attending inside and outside events, under tents, etc. 

Equipment Used

  • Telephones, computer with associated peripherals, and software.

Expected Work Schedule

Schedule will be determined after hiring. Applicant must be available to receive and then train during the day Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Additionally, applicant must be able to attend meetings, community events, and training in the evening and off-site locations. 

Would prefer an intern that is interested in working for more than one semester, to allow continuity of ideas and thought. Also, would prefer interns that can work at least 15-20 hours a week.
