Full Time

School Counselor:
Primary Placement at Knapp Elementary School (60%) and Fratt Elementary School (40%)

Required Certifications/Licenses:
Wisconsin Educators License – School Counselor #966 or #7054

Position Purpose:
Utilizing leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, school counselors promote student success, provide preventive services, and respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic, career, and personal/social development for all students.
The major function of the school counselor is to incorporate the elements of a comprehensive school-counseling program per the Wisconsin Comprehensive School Counseling Model and the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model.

Formal Education:
Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling

Experience:
Previous experience in school counseling preferred.

4. Ability to work under minimal supervision.

5. Knowledge of appropriate counseling theories, student interventions and strategies.

6. Ability to identify resources to facilitate services for students and parents.

7. Working knowledge of applicable rules and regulations.

8. Ability to work with municipal, county and state agencies.

9. Knowledgeable about community resources and actively pursue collaboration with family members and community stakeholders (medical, legal, financial and social).

10. Ability to recognize and understand the problem of child abuse/neglect.

11. Knowledge of reporting procedures and comply with state law in reporting suspected child abuse and neglect.

12. Ability to work as a team player.

13. Ability to lead in critical situations.

Essential Functions:

1. MAJOR FUNCTION: DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT OF A COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAM

1.1 Discusses the comprehensive school counseling program with the school administrator.

1.2 Develops and maintains a written plan for effective delivery of the school counseling program based on the Wisconsin Comprehensive School Counseling Program Student Standards and

current individual school data.

1.3 Communicates the goals of the comprehensive school counseling program to education stakeholders.

1.4 Maintains current and appropriate resources for education stakeholders.

1.5 Uses 80% of time providing services through the Guidance Curriculum, Individual Student

Planning and Preventive and Responsive Services and 20% of time in program management,

system support and accountability based on the ASCA Comprehensive Model.

2. MAJOR FUNCTION: DELIVERY OF A COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAM

School Counseling Curriculum

2.1 Provides leadership and collaborates with other educators in the integration of the School

Counseling Student Content Standards across the curriculum.

2.2 Implements developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school goals.

Individual Student Planning

2.3 Assists all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career and

personal/social skills, goals and plans.

2.4 Accurately and appropriately interprets and utilizes student data.

2.5 Collaborates with parents/guardians and educators to assist students with educational and career

planning.

Responsive Services

2.6 Provides individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs.

2.7 Consults and collaborates effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators and other

educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs.

2.8 Implements an effective referral and follow-up process.

2.9 Accurately and appropriately uses assessment procedures for determining and structuring

individual and group counseling services.

System Support

2.10 Provides appropriate information to staff related to the comprehensive school-counseling

program.

2.11 Assists teachers, parents/guardians and other stakeholders in interpreting and understanding

student data.

2.12 Participates in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills.

2.13 Uses available technology resources to enhance the school-counseling program.

2.14 Adheres to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the school counseling profession.

2.15 We provide support in student academic performance, behavior and attendance and assists with appropriate interventions.

3. MAJOR FUNCTION: ACCOUNTABILITY

3.1 Conducts a yearly program audit to review extent of program implementation.

3.2 Collects and analyzes data to guide program direction and emphasis.

3.3 Measures results of the school counseling program activities and shares results as appropriate.

  • Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods, up to six hours in an eight-hour day
  • Ability to perform light physical work, frequently lifting up to ten pounds without assistance in an indoor setting
  • Ability to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person to provide information and assistance
  • Ability to move throughout the building and from building to building
  • Dexterity and hand/eye coordination necessary to operate computer keyboard and other office equipment such as fax machine, copier, etc.
  • Hearing ability adequate to participate in numerous conversations throughout the day, both in person and over the telephone
  • Ability to complete job activities in an environment where background noise and frequent interruptions are the norm
  • Ability to maintain concentration and focus on tasks requiring timeliness and accuracy
