Job Summary

Become a valued member of Racine County’s engineering team, performing technical work in the field of Public Works. Enjoy a diverse workload which emphasizes drafting of project plans, construction inspection, highway permitting, and field surveying within a first-rate work culture.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Draft AutoCad Civil 3D preliminary plans and final plans from survey notes for various highway and parks projects. Make calculations of construction quantities, right-of-way areas, and other engineering and/or surveying computations.
  2. Conduct and perform traffic counts, speed data, accident data gathering, and other elements of traffic studies.
  3. Perform various functions of survey work, operate levels, transits, GPS, and make field measurements and necessary survey notes for highway and park projects. Operate and maintain all survey equipment.
  4. Assist with oversight in the designs and preparations of complete plans, specifications, cost estimates and bidding documents for various highway and park projects.
  5. Prepare right-of-way, traffic control, erosion control, and other plans as necessary.
  6. Perform as an inspector on public works projects.
  7. Coordinate engineering needs of county maintenance crews, including marking out right-of-way, setting grades for ditching work, setting grades for culvert replacements, laying out pavement marking and sign locations, etc.
  8. Coordinate with County maintenance crews for proper placement of traffic signs and pavement markings.
  9. Review, approve, and issue right-of-way permits for county maintained highways.
  10. Maintain County records and files.
  11. Respond to inquiries from stakeholders. Provide information from county files/records, in response to inquiries from contractors, surveyors, engineers, and the general public.

Supervision Received
Receives supervision from the Engineering Manager.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of Associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Land Surveying, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in AutoCad Civil 3D design
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • 2 years or more work experience in a similar field.
  • Experience with Land Survey.
  • Experience with Trimble software and GPS surveying equipment
  • Effective communicator in both written and oral form.
Physical Qualification
  • Continuous (67-100% of workday) sitting, use of far and near vision, and lifting small objects.
  • Frequent (34-66% of workday) standing, walking, talking, hearing, lifting objects weighing 1- 20 pounds, carrying objects weighing 1-20 pounds, and pushing/pulling objects weighing 1-20 pounds.
  • Occasionally (1-33% of workday) stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, balancing, bending/twisting, reaching, lifting objects weighing 21-50 pounds, pushing/pulling objects weighing 21-50 pounds.
  • Lifting over 51 pounds requires assistance. Assistance means the use of levers, work machines, another person, etc.
Work Environment
  • Frequent (34-66% of workday) inside work with protection from weather conditions and outside work in extreme cold and heat with temperature changes.
  • Occasional (1-33% of workday) wet and humid conditions, exposure to mechanical hazards, heights above 12 feet and fast-moving vehicles, and exposure to dust.
