Cross Categorical Teacher at Non-Public Schools

Position Purpose:

To provide special education services in the school setting for students with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

Required Certifications/Licenses:

Wisconsin Special Education Cross Categorical #1801 or other valid special education license.

Formal Education:

Bachelor's degree, preferably in the area of Special Education or other educational related fields.

Preferred Experience:

• Experience working with children or young adults with diverse academic, functional, and behavioral needs.

• Experience working in an urban, culturally diverse setting.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Promotes the belief and understanding that all students can and will learn.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Encourages, models, and maintains high standards of professional conduct and appearance.
  • Must have an excellent attendance record.
  • Ability to multitask, effectively prioritize and work independently on position related needs and tasks.
  • Must be flexible and adaptable to meet changing requirements, processes and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records under FERPA and HIPAA.
  • Adheres to district policies and state special education timelines.
  • Must be proficient in the use of various software including, but not limited to, Microsoft Word and Excel, Google Apps, and knowledge of or the ability to quickly learn Infinite Campus.
  • Must have an understanding of and ability to apply a variety of instructional and behavioral strategies, supports, and interventions.
  • Work successfully in both independent, team, and small or large group settings.

Essential Functions:

  • Gather and conduct informal assessment data, collaboratively develop and write appropriate IEPs, and conduct ongoing progress monitoring activities for students receiving special education services.
  • Effectively case manage and deliver specialized instruction to students as indicated in their IEPs in regular or special education environments within the school setting.
  • Effectively collaborate with regular education teachers to align and implement curricular supports and supplementary aids and services.
  • Communicate and interact in a positive, constructive manner with students, families, educational assistants and fellow teachers to accommodate the individual needs of the students.
  • Promptly complete necessary records, forms and reports and maintain records as needed to comply with district, state and federal regulations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge in state standards and the ability to adapt the curriculum to meet the individual student learning needs.
  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively work with students who have diverse learning styles.
  • Other duties as assigned

Safety:

You are responsible for taking any and all steps necessary to protect yourself and others against occupational accidents, injuries, and illnesses.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to spend up to 70% of the day walking.
  • Able to walk or run quickly through hallways and stairwells in an emergency situation.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods, respond to active crisis situations and support student movement.
  • Ability to perform light physical work, frequently lifting up to 50 pounds without assistance
  • Ability to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person to provide information and assistance
  • Ability to move throughout the building and from building to building
  • Dexterity and hand/eye coordination necessary to operate computer keyboard and other office equipment
  • Hearing ability adequate to participate in numerous conversations throughout the day, both in person and over the telephone
  • Ability to complete job activities in an environment where background noise and frequent interruptions are the norm
  • Ability to maintain concentration and focus on tasks requiring timeliness and accuracy
